Getting Around Phnom Penh: Cars, Tuk-Tuks, Grab and Bikes
Living in Cambodia — neighborhoods, schools, healthcare, cost of living, and the day-to-day rhythm.
Foreigners entering the Cambodian property market usually ask the same questions in a slightly different order. This piece is written for that person — someone who wants specifics, not marketing.
Phnom Penh is Cambodia's economic capital, home to roughly 2.3 million people, and the country's dominant property market. The city concentrates most of the strata-titled condo supply that foreigners can legally own.
Neighborhood Character
Expats and long-stay foreigners in Cambodia tend to converge on a small number of districts per city. In Phnom Penh, that's BKK1 for daily convenience, Riverside for restaurants and character, Toul Kork for families, and Chroy Changvar for space, air, and river views. Each has a different price point and a different day-to-day feel.
Daily Costs
A reasonable monthly household budget in Phnom Penh for a couple lands around USD 2,200–3,500, depending mostly on rent and school fees. Utilities are inexpensive, groceries are cheap if you shop locally and moderate at Western supermarkets, and eating out ranges from USD 3 for excellent Khmer street food to USD 60 for a good tasting menu.
Schools and Healthcare
International schools cluster in Toul Kork and along the airport road. Fees range from around USD 5,000 to USD 25,000 per year depending on curriculum and grade. Private hospitals such as Royal Phnom Penh and Sunrise Japan Hospital handle most routine cases; Bangkok is a 55-minute flight for anything complex.
Getting Around
Grab and PassApp cover most trips inside Phnom Penh for a few dollars. Tuk-tuks remain viable and fun. Owning a car is straightforward but rarely necessary if you live in BKK1, Riverside, or Toul Kork.
Community
The foreign community is small, dense, and quick to welcome newcomers. Chambers of commerce, sports clubs, and neighborhood WhatsApp groups are the fastest way to plug in.
